Werner Droste: Waiting for the Wall
Photo exhibition with slide show
As a teenager, Werner Droste traveled to Berlin with a group of schoolchildren. During several visits, he took iconic photographs on a few rolls of Agfacolor slide film, both before and after the construction of the Berlin Wall. Droste was well-prepared thanks to a course taught by his uncle, who worked at Leica and wrote books on photography. However, he never exhibited these photos publicly. After his death, his stepson discovered the slides, which are now on display at click & show in Berlin-Mitte. Many of the photos were taken on the very street where the gallery is now showing them: at the corner of Gartenstrasse and Bernauer Strasse. The exhibition opens on Friday, September 19, 2025, from 6 to 9 pm.
Around 35 framed prints and numerous slides are on display at click & show. The gallery belongs to the specialist shop click & surr, which focuses on analog photography. Werner Droste died five years ago and would now be 85 years old. His pictures depict scenes shortly before and during the construction of the Berlin Wall. Afterward, Droste primarily took slides in West Berlin. He usually only used one roll of Agfacolor L UT18 film per trip. Photography was an expensive hobby. But most of his photos turned out well, impressively illustrating the situation in the divided city and the process of reconstruction after the war.
